Suttons Group, a global leader in the logistics and chemical distribution industry embarked on a strategic investment to expand their Widnes site, reflecting the significant growth of their tanker and international business. The planned expansion ensures operations continue to meet the highest safety standards and provides room for future development. Known for managing one of the largest vehicle-mounted tanker fleets worldwide, the work will provide Sutton’s with additional capacity for up to sixty tanker trailers, significantly boosting operational capabilities.
A competitive bidding process launched at the back end of 2023 secured Contract Services the position of lead contractor for the construction of a new 5000m2 reinforced concrete apron. Based in Manchester, Contract Services is a multi-disciplined contractor specialising in construction, new builds, extensions, and civils work. With a proven track record in groundworks, utilities installation, car parks, and landscaping, they proved the ideal partner for the project. Starting work in Jan 2024, the team faced significant challenges due to one of the wettest winters on record and complex ground structural issues. Despite these setbacks, the project was completed on time in July, underscoring Contract Services’s reputation as a reliable and skilled contractor capable of delivering complex projects on time and within budget, even under tough circumstances.
Project Scope and Challenges
The project’s scope involved laying a 5000m2 concrete apron, complete with kerbs, drainage, lighting, and service ducts, at Suttons Group’s headquarters. The apron would provide the necessary space for Suttons’ expanding fleet, ensuring their operations could continue efficiently without interruption. However, the project was not without its challenges.
From the outset, it became clear that the adverse weather conditions would exacerbate already challenging ground conditions, requiring Contract Services to leverage their years of engineering expertise to keep the project on track. The site, which included remnants of an old watercourse and previous structural foundations, presented significant difficulties in achieving a stable sub-base.
To address the waterlogged site, the team implemented a 24/7 pumping operation to remove excess water and create a suitable working environment. The existing concrete apron and structures were recycled and crushed into 6F2 material, reducing waste and saving costs.
Working with subcontractor Beamus Utilities, the ground team used established ground remediation techniques, including lime injections, to strengthen the sub-base and increase its load-bearing capacity. The lime reacts with soil, forming a cementitious material and decreasing moisture content, improving CBR readings to the level required for safe and robust foundations.
The project’s success was a testament to the collaborative efforts of Contract Services and Suttons Group. The Suttons team actively engaged with the project, providing valuable insights and support throughout construction. This partnership was instrumental in overcoming challenges and achieving a successful outcome.
A Project to Be Proud Of . . .
The construction of the new concrete apron at Suttons Group’s headquarters in Widnes is a remarkable achievement. It demonstrates Contract Services’ ability to overcome significant challenges and deliver on their commitments. The project highlights the importance of innovation, adaptability, and collaboration in construction, particularly when faced with adverse conditions.
