From one van to nationwide delivery – a story built on trust, teamwork, and transformation.
In 1985, the year the first mobile phone call was made in the UK and Live Aid united the world through music, two ambitious men in the North West launched Contract Services with little more than a van, a vision, and an unshakable work ethic. Fast forward forty years, and that small start-up has grown into one of the region’s most respected commercial contractors delivering multimillion-pound projects across the UK with the same grit and graft that defined our earliest days.

Then & Now: The Evolution of the Industry
It’s hard to overstate how much the world of construction has transformed since 1985. Back then, building plans were sketched by hand on drawing boards, phone calls were made from site cabins (often with poor reception), and a ‘project file’ was just that – a lever-arch folder brimming with highlighter marks, scribbled notes, and carbon copies.
Health and safety protocols were mostly printed on posters rather than embedded in daily practice. Sustainability wasn’t yet a buzzword. And the idea of fitting out a workspace with integrated IT infrastructure or ergonomic design principles? Still a few years away.
When the world paused in 2020, construction couldn’t. Overnight, our teams became key workers. Sites had to stay open but safe. Contract Services responded with speed and care introducing new site layouts, distanced workflows, digital inductions, and contactless deliveries. Face masks became as essential as hard hats. And supply chains? Rerouted, rethought, and reinforced under pressure. It was a true test of our resilience, our relationships, and our resolve.
Fast forward to today, and the industry looks, feels, and functions like a different world, one shaped by innovation, digital transformation, and rising expectations.

- Digital Construction Tools: We now design using precision software like Revit and AutoCAD, modelling airflow, lighting, and energy use before a single brick is laid. BIM (Building Information Modelling) has redefined collaboration, enabling all stakeholders to work from a single source of truth.
- Smart Workspaces: Fit-outs today are not just about function, they’re about experience. We now build intelligent, connected workspaces that boost productivity, enhance wellbeing, and support hybrid ways of working. Acoustic zoning, biophilic design, flexible layouts, these have become mainstream.
- Sustainability and Regulation: We’ve seen an explosion in environmental standards, from BREEAM and WELL Certification to net-zero carbon commitments. Clients expect not only compliance but leadership, sustainable materials, energy efficiency, circular thinking. Construction now plays a front-line role in tackling the climate crisis.
- Health, Safety & Culture: Where once H&S was a compliance checkbox, today it’s a cultural cornerstone. We’ve moved from reactive to proactive, embedding safety, wellbeing, and mental health into every corner of the job site.
At the core of all this change? It’s still about people, people solving problems, making decisions, collaborating with care, and building spaces that shape the way we work, live, and connect.
Technology has given us sharper tools, and the world has handed us higher stakes. But the essence remains the same: show up, do it right, and build something worth being proud of.

More Than Buildings – We’ve Built a Dream Team
Contract Services isn’t just a business. It’s a team. A family of grafters, thinkers, planners, and perfectionists who believe that good enough… isn’t.
Some of our team have been here since the early days. Others are just getting started. But every person matters – and every one brings something special.
In an industry grappling with skill shortages and shifting expectations, we’ve doubled down on something timeless: investing in people. Not just training courses and upskilling (though we do that, too), but creating an environment where people feel seen, supported, and valued. A place where ideas are heard, progress is shared, and everyone has skin in the game.
Looking Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
The construction industry faces some big challenges: labour shortages, sustainability demands, rising costs, and increasing regulation. But we see just as many opportunities.
As the North West cements its position as a hub for science, tech, logistics and regeneration, Contract Services is perfectly placed to support clients looking for quality, reliability, and innovation from a multi-disciplinary partner.
Our plan? Stay true to our values, keep adapting, and continue delivering the kind of projects we’ll be proud to look back on – another 40 years from now.

Here’s to the Next 40
To our clients, partners, suppliers, and, most of all, our incredible team: thank you for being part of our story.
We’ve come a long way. But the best is yet to come.
