Contract Services was appointed as lead contractor for a major infrastructure expansion project at Suttons Group’s headquarters in Widnes.
A global leader in logistics and chemical distribution, Suttons Group operates one of the world’s largest vehicle-mounted tanker fleets. As part of its continued growth, the company embarked on a strategic investment programme to expand capacity at its Widnes site, creating additional space for up to 60 tanker trailers while maintaining the highest operational and safety standards.
Following a competitive tender process, Contract Services was selected to deliver the scheme, drawing on its extensive experience in civil engineering, groundworks and infrastructure projects.
The Challenge
Works commenced in January 2024 during one of the wettest winters on record, creating significant challenges from the outset. The site presented a number of complex ground engineering issues, including waterlogged conditions, remnants of an historic watercourse and existing structural foundations. These factors created difficulties in achieving the stable sub-base required to support a large reinforced concrete apron designed for heavy-duty tanker operations.
Despite these challenges, the project team was tasked with maintaining programme certainty and delivering the scheme within a tight construction schedule.
Scope of Works
The project involved the construction of a new 5,000m² reinforced concrete apron and associated infrastructure, including:
- Reinforced concrete hardstanding for tanker trailer storage
- Kerbing and external works
- Surface water drainage systems
- Lighting installations
- Service duct infrastructure
- Ground remediation and stabilisation works
- Site preparation and earthworks
The completed facility provides Suttons Group with significant additional operational capacity, supporting future growth across its tanker and international logistics divisions.
Engineering Solutions
To overcome the challenging ground conditions, Contract Services implemented a series of innovative engineering and remediation measures.
A 24-hour pumping operation was established to manage groundwater and create a safe working environment, while existing concrete structures and hardstanding were recycled and crushed into 6F2 material for reuse on site, reducing waste and delivering cost savings.
Working alongside specialist subcontractor Beamus Utilities, the team employed established ground improvement techniques including lime stabilisation. By injecting lime into the sub-base, moisture levels were reduced and soil strength increased, creating the load-bearing capacity required for the new apron. These measures enabled the project team to overcome the adverse conditions and maintain progress despite the exceptionally challenging winter weather.
Outcome
Completed in July 2024, the project was delivered on time and within budget despite the significant technical and environmental challenges encountered during construction. The new hardstanding provides capacity for up to 60 additional tanker trailers, supporting Suttons Group’s continued growth and strengthening operational capabilities at its Widnes headquarters.
